This 5 Hour Class is 100% online and can be completed at your pace within 30 days. It is a required course by the NY DMV before scheduling the road test. In order to take this course, you must be 18 years or older and have a valid NY photo learner permit.

After you successfully complete the course, your completion information will be automatically reported to the New York DMV. Then, you have met the New York Pre-Licensing requirement and are able to schedule your road test appointment with the DMV.

Course Details

The New York Online Pre-Licensing Course introduces permit holders with knowledge on how to keep you and others safe on the road. You will learn the basic rules of the road, the dangers of driving while distracted or under the influence, as well as other important skills and habits that will help encourage you to drive safely.

Our course contains ten learning modules. We have also included a “Pre-Module” that will help you learn how to navigate the course. The final Module is a Course Re-cap that includes a review of main takeaways from each module and next steps. There is no final exam at the end of the course. However, before completing the course, you will have to complete a brief satisfaction survey.

Each module ends with a brief three question quiz. You must score at least 70% on each quiz to move on in the course.

The course includes a minimum of 270 minutes of learning, not including the quizzes. You must complete your training within 30 calendar days of registering for the course.

Step 2: Complete an Approved 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course

You must complete a Pre-Licensing Course in order to be able to schedule your road test. If you are under 18, you are not eligible to take the Online Pre-Licensing Course. You must either take a Drivers Education Course or take the Classroom Pre-Licensing Course with a driving school.

Online Traffic Safety’s Course satisfies the DMV pre-licensing course requirement to take the road test, for people ages 18 and over. After completing the pre-licensing course, Online Traffic Safety will report your course completion to the NY DMV. You will get an email confirmation for your course completion.

Step 3: Practice Driving

If you are under 18, the DMV requires that you complete a minimum of 50 hours of supervised driving practice with a licensed driver age 21 or older, with at least 15 hours at night and at least 10 hours in moderate to heavy traffic.

There is no driving practice requirement if you are over the age of 18. However, it is highly advisable that you practice driving before taking your road test.

Step 4: Pass Your Road Test

You are able to schedule and take your road test with the NY DMV, once you have completed the 5 Hour Pre-Licensing Course. Make sure you bring all your required documentation with you, on the day of your road test. If you take the Online Pre-Licensing Course with Online Traffic Safety, you will not need to bring a 5 Hour Completion Certificate with you. We will automatically report your course completion to the NY DMV.

When you pass your road test, you will receive your interim temporary license. Your card license should arrive in the mail from the DMV in approximately 2 weeks.
