Albany, New York
Albany residents with a New York learner permit must complete a 5-hour pre-licensing course before getting a full driver's license. Until recently, the options were a classroom session or a live Zoom at a set time. Online Traffic Safety provides an approved alternative: a completely self-paced online course you take on your own schedule.
Online Traffic Safety is a NY DMV-approved provider of the Online Pre-Licensing Course. Our course covers the full DMV-required curriculum, delivered with audio narration and video in select sections. It runs around the clock, saves your progress automatically, and works on any device. Most Albany students complete it over one or two evenings from home, skipping the drive on Washington Avenue.
Once you finish, we report your completion electronically to the NY DMV. Per state requirements, completions are posted to your driver record within 24 to 48 hours. No paperwork, no mailing anything, no certificate to keep track of.
Your Options
If you are a first-time driver in New York State, a pre-licensing course is required before you can book a road test. Albany residents can choose from three options to satisfy this rule, each covering the same DMV curriculum but with distinct delivery and experience.
Classroom Course
This in-person option is offered by Albany driving schools at scheduled times and locations. Anyone can attend, including those under 18 with a permit. You sit through a class with an instructor in person and receive a paper MV-278 certificate at the end. Some schools hold classes weekly, others less often.
Live Zoom Course
Albany students can attend a live video class over Zoom, run by a driving school instructor. You join from home, but you must be there at a scheduled date and time, typically a weekday evening or a weekend block. After the session, a paper MV-278 certificate is mailed to you. It is available to all ages. Full attendance is mandatory.
Self-Paced Online Course (OPL)
This format eliminates the classroom, the live video, and the fixed schedule entirely. You decide when to log in and how fast to go, whether it's morning, evening, weekends, or 2 AM. Your progress saves automatically, so you can finish across multiple sittings. When you're done, your completion goes electronically to the NY DMV within 24 to 48 hours. No paper certificate to print, carry, or mail. This course is available to adults 18 and older with a valid NY photo learner permit. Online Traffic Safety is a NY DMV-approved provider of this course.
Most Popular
Every option meets the identical state mandate. What separates them is flexibility. In a classroom, you commute to a site and reserve a fixed block of time. Zoom eliminates the trip but still demands attendance at a set hour. The self-paced online course has zero schedule constraints: you choose the time, the place, and the number of sittings.
